  30. 3) PCs and Microwave ovens look remarkably similiar. You *did* install
  31. the modem in the ISA slot, right? And not in bacon crisper rack?

  33. More seriously, I think you want to bring the matter up with the
  34. surge protector manufacturer. You also want to make sure the surge
  35. protector is well grounded (and that you replace it shortly after
  36. you see it smoking.) Finally, consider unplugging the modem between
  37. uses. Maybe you could rig up a mock modem with cardboard and small
  38. strips of foil and little black plastic bits, and hook the line to that,
  39. as propitiation to the Thunder god, between usages. This is likely to
  40. work: that's all a modem really is anyway, and in any case Thor was 
  41. never very bright.

  51. With all due respect, if that is the view you *usually* get of fighter
  52. planes, I submit that you have larger and more international problems
  53. on hand than just overly exuberant electrons.
